The human brain is continuously bombarded by pleasant and unpleasant information from the inside (body) and the outside (environment). Usually, we can deal with this relatively easily. In case of overstimulation, our organism reacts using a flight or fight behavior (higher pulse and blood pressure, mobilization of extra powers), which has been in place for thousands of years,to escape such a situation. It has always been an instrument for overcoming fears, threats, attacks, and other worries, especially to escape or repress unpleasant or dangerous situations. Without this mechanism denial of reality would be the only way out.
Which possibilities does hypnosis offer for stress management?
For mere survival in our society, we need to deal with reality. It does not really matter what the stress factor is or how much stress we face; Rather, the importance lies on how we deal with stress. Are we able to find an emotional balance? Or is a our emotional protection shield so ruined due to our limited perspective that we cannot counter these stress factors?
The less we are able to deal with stress, the more we limit ourselves to mere functioning. We decreasingly participate in our lives, and we retreat to our comfort zone. In such situations the only escape for our brain is mostly just apathy, depression and/or super-susceptibility (increased susceptibility of being externally controlled) . Negativity on all levels then becomes the determining factor; senselessness, melancholy, hypersensitivity, and zero-tolerance start to establish. In short, one is in a downward spiral, in which course a person may easily develop various forms of stress-induced illnesses: burnout, depression, excessive smoking, overeating, rage, grief, and similar reactions. All these then require appropriate attention and professional assistance. They are also the logical consequence of our behavior.
Scientific studies estimate that 90% of diseases are caused by stress. In other words, the more we are functioning to participate in life, and the more we repress our individual emotions (grief, anger, pain, etc.), the likelier we feel stressed and are likelier to enter the emotional downward spiral. Hypnosis, especially a Body Wisdom session, seeks to to look for the true cause of the stress. If these circumstances cannot be changed (any more), it should be possible to at least shift the perception of the situation and to alter the underlying emotional based belief system.
Hypnotherapy can help to find new answers for above mentioned and similar situations and to replace so far destructive attitudes and reactions with positive behavior pattern. Buried emotions can be brought back to the surface and resolved. External compulsions can be reduced and new means can be found to avoid previous impairments.
